Black History Month

Week beginning 12.10.20 and 19.10.20

THE SAME, BUT DIFFERENT

This assembly plan is written as part of the Mentally Healthy Schools World Mental Health Day 2020
The beginnings of Black History Month go back to 1926 when black historian Carter G. Woodson began what he called “Negro History Week” in the USA. In 1969, the week’s celebration was expanded to a month and in 1976, Black History Month was endorsed by the US government. In the United Kingdom, Black History Month has been celebrated every October since 1987.Carter Woodson’s original goal was to educate everyone about the cultural backgrounds and achievements of people of African descent.

Through our whole school curriculum we aim to educate all of pupils to respect and celebrate diversity and difference. For example, as part of the Y4 topic on the 1960s I know that you have been researching Martin Luther King Jr and writing your own speeches and in Y6 Walter Tull's biography is an integral part of your study of WW1.

Some children have already brought in things for me that they have prepared at home to share with their classes to celebrate Black History Month, for example poems, research projects and speeches.. You are welcome to do the same and we will build a display in school to show what you have discovered.
